Halloween is easily my favorite holiday of the year, and I'm not sure why that is. Have you ever noticed that the really theatrical people seem to be the ones who dive head-first into the macabre? I've always enjoyed theatre. We'll go with that. But I just like being scared. Or attempting to be scared, because it takes a lot. And I really like scaring people. Especially my children.
As an aside- I'm mostly kidding. I had the chance to buy a Chucky doll that could've really scared the bejeezus out of my toddlers, and I refrained, because I love them just. that. much.
Anyhow, while I love decorating for Christmas and Easter, I really enjoy decorating for Halloween most of all. So I could hardly contain myself last Saturday morning when the weather was a perfect, overcast 69 degrees with a breeze. I got out the spiderwebs and went to work. Decorating for Halloween--at least the route that I normally go--is pretty inexpensive. I have toddlers, so I can't do anything too outrageous for fear of scarring them for life and having to pay for therapy. So I'm only left with a few options. I usually prefer passing over the garish purple and bright orange Halloween style that you see a lot of in stores for a more reserved black-and-white-with a peep of orange vibe. It's a little more subtle, and now I try to reserve our neighbor-scaring antics for special occasions only. I get most of my supplies from Walmart and the Dollar Tree, although I occasionally stumble into Target for the $13 black-and-white-glitter-pumpkins that you just have to have. But really, most of it is $1.
Crows, Spider webs, Skulls, spooky drooped fabric, and black candles--all Dollar Tree. The large life size skeleton was a new investment this year whom Bobby and I have affectionately named "Norm." Most of the pumpkins are fresh from the local area. And quite a bit of our Halloween decor is DIY. The vines wrapped around the front columns are $1 green Dollar Tree vines that I spray painted black. The candle holders on the dining table are wine bottles that I sprayed black. The wreath is a simple grapevine wreath sprayed black with some black roses and a crow attached. Spray paint is my BFF. And my favorite part of the front porch was the cheapest--the twigs picked right out of the yard which are placed in the planters to make a spooky front door piece.
Alex doesn't understand my love of the holiday, as he is a Christmas-only kind of guy, and he thinks that I go overboard with Halloween decor. But I don't think it's too much at all? Either way, we said "in sickness and in health," in our wedding vows, so he's got to stick with me.
Ready for the weekend! XO
