Sift Magazine & The Outdoors

Saturday, March 7, 2015

My absence… I know, it’s been a bit lengthy.  Do you remember when I blogged about being sick?  Well, that nasty bugger has been making its rounds over and over again in this house.  Just as soon as one of us is over it, one of us falls victim to it again.  The only things left to Clorox are the dogs.  The dogs are the two things in this house that haven’t been thoroughly cleaned and are two things that all of us touch each day.

Despite the reoccurrence of sickness, we’ve had a lot of bright things in between the rounds of phlegm.  First, Sift Magazine by King Arthur Flour is a must read if you love to bake breads and other delectable goods.  I’m not much of a magazine buyer, but I couldn’t resist this one, and I am so glad that I purchased it.  Not only are there great recipes throughout the magazine, along with amazing photographs, but also there are stories of real people who care about food, their contributions to society, and tradition rather than money.  Totally worth the $13 and will be kept in the kitchen bookshelf to reference for recipes in the future.

Second, we found some decent outdoors.  I know, some people want to curse me for not thinking the beach is paradise.  It isn’t folks.  Paradise is on top of a mountain, snow dropping on your face, hot cocoa waiting at the bottom, heart pumping fast from activity, and cold fingers and toes awaiting the warmth of a fire.  Also, a general lack of people is a bonus.

So, we traveled to Blackwater River State Park for a wee “hike”.  I was unaware the War Between the States was ongoing, but apparently, Confederate flags still fly.  Interesting.  Either way, we continued to the trail, mindful not to say anything about being Yankees.  We had no need to worry, however, as there was a general lack of people.

While the trail was mostly a walking path that simply wasn’t paved, it was great to get outside with our family and enjoy some fresh air and movement.  The Boy fell asleep for most of the trail due to a reemergence of the plague, but even he couldn’t help but ask upon our return home, “Can we go hiking again?”  We’ll work on the proper use of “hike” at a later point in time.

I’ll keep this short as it’s the weekend.  It’s probably time for you to get outdoors, and I’m going to Google how to Clorox a dog.

Time to fly,
Liz
